The Ditchling Fair returns with its enduring spirit of community and celebration, continuing a tradition first granted by King Edward II in 1312. More than seven centuries on, it remains a moment for the village to gather, share stories and revel in its collective character. This year’s theme, Larks, Laughter and Legends, inspires a playful, story-rich creative direction across posters, social media, wristbands and the fair programme.
Inspired by medieval marginalia, the identity centres on a lively illustration set led by a calamitous yet wholesome knight as the fair’s mascot. A cast of curious characters, modernised medieval-style typefaces, and a framing device drawn from castle banners come together to create a world of gentle chaos and joyful storytelling, inviting the community to step into a fair shaped by humour, history and legend.
At the heart of the identity is a lovable but hopelessly accident-prone knight. Inspired by the mischievous spirit of medieval marginalia, he guides visitors through a world of larks, laughter and legends.
The contemporary typeface with subtle medieval influences helped bridge past and present. The result feels rooted in the fair's long history while remaining approachable, legible and full of character.
A framing device inspired by castle banners is used across the posters, creating a bold, unified structure that draws the eye while nodding to the themes medieval style.
