The Church of Numb Toes
Worshipping cruel sea gods in an ancient land.
Information
Surfing, much like early Christianity, carries its own myths, rituals, beliefs, and forms of devotion. In Cornwall, winter surfing becomes a brutal yet spiritual pilgrimage, a practice explored in The Church of Numb Toes, which highlights the parallels between this contemporary “religion” and the early Christian traditions that came before it.
The project captures the raw essence of Cornwall’s winter surf culture through photography, classical artwork, and a poetic narrative that weaves together mythological and spiritual themes. The resulting book, film, and artworks form a compelling exploration of surfing as a modern spiritual practice, celebrating the resilience, camaraderie, and unique culture of those who brave the frigid waters.
